On the left corner, you can see clearly the shaft from the stepper motor with the nylon disc and the spiral (see the arrow) and the metal pin using this track to operate the read- write-head. You can imagine that this caused a lot of zerotrack adjustment problems.

Also notice the way the floppy was driven by a simple rubber belt.

As soon as the half height drives became affordable, all FD501s were replaced.
